Ventnor, Isle of Wight
Timber Frame Design, Structural Timber Manufacture, On-Site Assembly
Located in one of the most exposed coastal areas on the Isle of Wight, the Ventnor Haven Fishery project required a building capable of withstanding harsh sea air, severe storms and corrosive salt. As part of a wider regeneration effort designed to create local jobs and support the regional shellfish industry, the brief called for a structure that could be built efficiently without the use of traditional blockwork. The primary challenge was to provide a structural solution that guaranteed long-term integrity and durability in a highly demanding marine environment.
Sydenhams Timber Engineering designed, manufactured and assembled a robust timber frame solution tailored specifically for this extreme coastal setting. We engineered the structure entirely from timber, utilising durable timber cladding and completely eliminating the need for traditional masonry.
Our precision off-site manufacturing process ensured the highest quality control for every component. This allowed our expert teams to manage the rapid on-site assembly of the building, ensuring the fishery could open quickly to begin supporting the local day boats and the wider community.
Standing strong since 2007, the timber frame building has successfully weathered nearly two decades of severe coastal conditions. The project proves that when engineered and assembled correctly, timber construction offers incredible durability and longevity.
Today, Ventnor Haven Fishery remains a thriving and much-loved destination where day boats land the freshest catch straight into the bay. It stands as a testament to the resilience of our structural timber solutions and our ability to support meaningful local regeneration.
